José is a former soccer player with a mysterious past that continues to haunt him, even at his job as a chef in New York City. He is a quiet worker, a characteristic that contrasts with his bossy older brother Manny, who owns the restaurant. When Manny fires a young waitress named Nina for being late, José follows Nina out of the restaurant and takes her to lunch.

Nina confides to José that she is pregnant, but does not love her boyfriend, the baby’s father. José listens to Nina’s story compassionately and is clearly concerned for her welfare. Nina is determined to “get rid of it,” and José persuades her to join him at his parents’ house for the rest of the afternoon. Through their difficult situations, José and Nina find healing and solace in helping each other, and they realize the gift of life that they have been given.
